Not your headline news blogs

If you're tired of seeing the same headlines over and over again, here are two blogs that offer daily news stories that don't make it to the front page: News of the Day and Justin Case You Missed It. According to the comments of the author of Justin Case You Missed It, however, the fate of that blog is up in the air.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving Day, everyone!

Since I began this blog a month and a half ago, I've gone through lots and lots of blogs. Today, I want to summarize my findings on the blogosphere so far:

1) There are lots of foreign language blogs out there. It's not surprising, since most of the world speaks a language other than English, but it means there are lots of blogs that I can't understand. :-(

2) Most blogs are like online diaries, talking about the author's day or what they're thinking or feeling at that moment (which makes me wonder why people are so ready to share their secrets with the public).

3) There are many spam/marketing blogs that promote a site, a get-rich-quick scheme, etc. I suppose it's not surprising since they've infiltrated mail, email, and other mediums too, but it's still sad.

4) What is a blog is a blurry definition. When using a blog search engine, I often get results that lead me to sites that don't look like blogs. I guess it's up to each person what they consider a blog to be.

5) I need to find more sites that are interesting. If you have an interesting blog that you would like me to feature here, or if you know of one, just send me an email.

Games on the Web

Tired of playing solitaire on your PC? Looking for new games to try out? Then Games on the Web is for you. Each day, the author profiles a different game, often with a screenshot from the game. One of these days, I'll have to try them out.

How Much Is My Blog Worth?

Using the link-to-dollar ratio from AOL's purchase of Weblogs Inc., How Much Is My Blog Worth calculates how much your blog is worth.

Sadly, this blog is worth $0.00. It's good to know my efforts are being rewarded. :-)

Harry Potter blogs

To commemorate today's opening of the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I looked for blogs dedicated to the boy wizard. Here are three that I found:
- The Hogwarts Wire
- The Pensieve
- Blogwarts

Hurricane Law Blog

If you have been affected by the recent hurricanes or knows someone who has, take a look at Hurricane Law Blog. According to the site itself, "The Hurricane Law Blog offers readers a central repository for current information about hurricane-related legislation, litigation, and regulatory issues affecting Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama."

Spider-Woman

There are a series of Spider-Woman blogs maintained by an author named Arachne. The entries show the cover art for each issue and a review of the issue, if available. To view the blogs, you can start at http://spider-womansf.blogspot.com/ and select one of the other Spider-Woman blogs through the links under the Contents menu on the right side of the page.

Photoblogs

As I mentioned before, there are many blogs devoted to displaying photographs. If you enjoy viewing such photos or you have a photoblog of your own that you want to publicize, then you may be interested in Photoblogs. Photoblogs is a directory of, you guessed it, photoblogs. It currently lists over 13,000 blogs in its database. You can search on photoblogs or select from one of the top favorites or top newcomers.

Cake Space

Cake Space is a blog devoted to cakes - recipes, tips, creative cake ideas, cake-making tools, etc. Two recent entries showed how the author made Halloween cakes in the shape of a jack-o-lantern and ghost, and what the finished product looked like. Very cute.

Frugal for Life

Frugal for Life provides many tips, advice, and articles on living frugally, or living below your means. This is a subject that is personally interesting to me because I try to live frugally, although not to the extreme that this blog sometimes recommends. However, for those who are trying to become more frugal, this is a good place to get some pointers.

Give Me Five

Give Me Five offers a list of things everyday. The lists vary by subject each time -- five things the author is doing that week, five favorite TV shows, five things in her purse, etc. Sometimes readers will respond with a list of five of their own, so if you want to post your five favorite TV shows under the author's, you can.

Shelly's Comic Book Shelf

Shelly's Comic Book Shelf gives reviews of comics that she's been reading. It's updated every week or couple of weeks. If you like her style but aren't into comic books, you can read some of her other blogs. At the bottom of the page, there's a link (as with most Blogger blogs) to VIEW MY COMPLETE PROFILE, and there you'll find eight other blogs (as of this writing) that she maintains!

Moggie's World

I have seen a few blogs that feature photographs that people have taken. One that I want to share today is Moggie's World. What I like about this site isn't just the pretty pictures, but also that he just has pictures -- there's no extraneous text about what a great photographer he is, his life story, blah blah blah. A picture is worth a thousand words, so let it speak for itself.

Teen blogging

I read an article from ClickZ that said most teens read only the blogs of their friends and people they know. This is in contrast to adults, who most often read blogs written by people they don't know.

If you're an adult and you're reading this blog, then congratulations, you fit the typical profile! If you're a teen and you're reading this blog, then consider yourself out of the ordinary, but in a good way. :-)

This is somewhat interesting because, as an adult, I read blogs for the subject matter, not based on who wrote it. I will read interesting blogs regardless of who writes them. Perhaps teens read blogs for the same reason, but what they find most interesting are the lives of their friends?

Any thoughts from other blog readers out there?

Question of the Day

Although it would be more appropriate to call it Puzzle of the Day or Brain Teaser of the Day, Question of the Day is a fun site if you enjoy puzzles or brain teasers (and I do). Everyday, the blog's author, Mike, posts a puzzle, and readers can submit their answers via comments. At the end of the day, Mike reveals the answer in the comment section as well.

More recipes

To show that I actually read the emails that are sent to me, here's a recipe blog site submitted by a reader: Shauna's Gluten-free Girl. In addition to recipes, there are links to other gluten-free sites, and regular updates about the author's life.

I came across two other recipe blogs over the weekend, Homemade Ice Cream Recipes and Jerky Recipes. Both appear to be written by the same author, given the same look and feel and that the blogs reference each other. I had no idea there were so many jerky recipes!
